Angel butts Bosnian RollsBosnian Rolls aka “Angel Butts”

Tonight I was planning to make a potato broccoli soup, but then I went to Devon Market and the earth shifted when I saw these rolls. Let me explain a bit, this market is run by a hilarious collection of Bosnians who curse with abandon because very few people can actually understand what they are saying. Thankfully Nick and I do, so we get to hear hilarious commentary on customers, the boss, etc. Anyway, this place has a killer bakery and deli. The hummus is amazing and it is the only place I’ve found in our area that regularly carries Bulgarian feta.

But what makes me drool instantly is the bread. It is intoxicating. I went in for one roll to accompany our soup – instead I ended up with four giant rolls and an abandoned plan for dinner.

Nick, upon smelling the rolls, declared, “They smell like angel butts.” I think he’s right. If you live anywhere north of the loop it is well worth a visit. Even you south-siders should venture up.

wafers Dulce Landia

Dulce Landia
(This website is amazing follow the piñata.)

I’ve walked past this store so many times thinking I should go in, but I never have. Until today, and it felt like falling into the board game Candy Land or like walking into a giant piñata. All the candies sold here are wrapped in beautiful shiny brightly colored foil or plastic. I now want a piñata to be featured at every event, no matter how small or large, in my life. Bought a new house? Piñata! Woke up on time? Piñata! Avoided being hung over on a Sunday morning? Piñata! You get the idea.

The candies are varied and copious. The man in the shop said, ‘Yes, it is a lot of candy, but I estimate it is only 20-30% of all the kinds produced in Mexico.’ Wow. And they give you samples, too. I tried a candy that had the consistency of taffy but was flavored with mango and chilies.

I wanted a little bit of everything, but I only had two dollars and I ended up with these wafer candies featured in the photo above. These are strange little “candies.” They are wheat wafers, ‘Just like the priest give you, yes?’ quoth the man at the store. Yes, just like the priest, plus rainbow colors and minus transubstantiation. I’ll be heading back soon to buy more wrapped treats.
