Kitchen Capers!

Posted by on Thursday, 16 July, 2009

While we were in Michigan for a wedding Nick and I stopped at a used bookstore and there was quite a collection of local recipe books. I didn’t end up taking any of those home with me, but I did find one from Hastings, Nebraska. This recipe book is called Kitchen Capers and is the source of the pineapple jelly recipe I posted about last time.

I’m writing about it now because it has an odd article at the front of the book. Here’s the cover:

KitchenCapers Kitchen Capers!

And here’s the paragraph:

KitchenCapers 2 Kitchen Capers!

It is oddly worded and poorly written, but the point gets through–feed your husband– not too much, not too little–and don’t set him on fire. Then you will have a happy marriage. Thanks, Kitchen Capers! You saved my marriage!

Another side note: In Nebraska, I was making copies of a few recipes and on the page with the Pepper Jelly recipe I wanted there was also a recipe for “Cheese Spread.” This one sounds truly hideous:

2 lbs Velveeta Cheese
10 boiled eggs, chopped
1 qt Mayonnaise
1 small onion, chopped ? make sure it’s small, lest your meal taste like something other than oily cheese covered eggs.

Ms. Burns, the author of the recipe, provides these instructions: “Melt cheese: add mayonnaise, eggs and onion. Very good sandwich spread. I chop eggs and onion in a food chopper so it is chopped fine.”

The thing with recipes like this one, is that they are so heartfelt. I feel like a jackass for laughing at Ms. Burns’ contribution to this recipe collection. She probably spread this concoction over many sandwiches for her thankful (maybe?) husband and/or kids. I guess it’s just not my style of eating or cooking. Maybe she’d call bullshit on my hummus recipes.

I don’t know, but the idea of Nick opening his lunch bag at work to find this is kind of funny. It would stink to high heaven and he probably couldn’t talk to anyone for the rest of the day since he’d have nasty egg/cheese/onion breath. Once you go there, there’s no coming back…best to just leave work for the day.
